In a message on behalf of PLU and Chairman Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the PLU General Secretary praised the players, supporters and organisers for delivering a competitive tournament that brought communities across the Ankole sub-region together.
“Sports is indeed a unifying factor and we as PLU will promote and support sports as one of our core activities aimed at building unity and promoting talent,” the General Secretary said.
The 2026 Ankole Cup brought together 13 districts from the Ankole sub-region. The competition was structured around group-stage matches before progressing through the knockout rounds to the grand finale. The tournament was widely presented by organisers and sports stakeholders as a platform for showcasing local football talent while strengthening unity among communities.
PLU also recognised the contribution of its Chairman, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, for his support to participating teams and appreciated PLU members who attended the final and joined other football supporters in celebrating the competition.
The General Secretary further commended the Ankole Cup organising team for what he described as a massive and well-organised tournament, pledging continued support for the competition and calling for increased funding to strengthen its future editions.
He also acknowledged the support associated with the office of the PLU Vice Chairman, Balaam Barugahara, including the commitment to seek additional funding for the tournament.

The message extended appreciation to Ambros Kibuka, Musa, the Assistant RDC of Rwampara, Prince Ashiraf, Hon. Kibaju Charity, Hon. Adrine, Eng. Raymond and other PLU supporters who contributed to the event and participated in the celebrations.
The General Secretary said PLU views sports as more than entertainment, emphasising its role in bringing young people together, identifying talent and strengthening communities. The Ankole Cup itself has increasingly been positioned as a vehicle for unity and talent development in the region, with organisers highlighting its ability to bring people together across different backgrounds.
He reaffirmed that PLU will continue encouraging young people to pursue constructive opportunities while supporting national development initiatives and the fight against corruption.
The General Secretary said the organisation would continue advancing what he described as the “PLU way” of supporting government initiatives, promoting integrity and creating opportunities for young people through sports and talent development, in line with the direction of Chairman Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba.
The successful conclusion of the Ankole Cup adds to the growing profile of the tournament, which has attracted significant regional participation and commercial support. Its 2026 edition was expanded to 13 districts and featured 43 matches from the group stages through the knockout rounds and final.
PLU’s commitment to supporting sports reflects its broader emphasis on youth mobilisation, community engagement and initiatives that bring Ugandans together around shared national interests.
The organisation congratulated Ibanda once again on its victory and commended Bushenyi and all participating districts for their contribution to a tournament that continues to provide young footballers with a platform to compete, develop their abilities and showcase their talent.
