KYEGEGWA — The Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) has resumed its grassroots mobilisation activities with a major Baraza held at Humura Playground in Kyegegwa District, bringing together the organisation’s leadership, local leaders, mobilisers and supporters from across western and central Uganda.
The Saturday, 22 August gathering was the first major PLU Baraza following the recent election period and restructuring of the organisation’s leadership, marking the beginning of a renewed programme of grassroots engagement across the country.
PLU General Secretary Rt. Hon. Twalla Fadil led the Secretariat delegation at the event alongside Deputy Director of Mobilisation and Tooro Sub-region Coordinator Hon. Henry Basaliza. The Baraza attracted participants from Kyegegwa and the wider Tooro region, as well as Bunyoro, Greater Mubende and other parts of the country.
The gathering provided an opportunity for the PLU leadership to interact directly with grassroots structures and local communities as the organisation moves to strengthen coordination, mobilisation and participation at district and sub-regional level.
Hon. Basaliza described the Kyegegwa engagement as the beginning of a broader mobilisation programme, noting that the organisation intends to build stronger structures from the grassroots upwards.
The Kyegegwa Baraza followed weeks of consultations and preparations involving district leaders and mobilisers. In July, a delegation from Kyegegwa held discussions with the PLU leadership at the National Secretariat in Naguru focusing on strengthening local structures, improving coordination and expanding grassroots engagement in the Tooro Sub-region.
Among the leaders reported at the Baraza were former Finance Minister Hon. Matia Kasaija, Deputy Attorney General Hon. Jackson Kafuuzi, and Lwemiyaga County MP Brig. Gen. (Rtd) Emmanuel Rwashande, alongside Members of Parliament, district chairpersons, mayors, Resident District Commissioners, religious leaders, business leaders and PLU coordinators.
Local mobilisation was coordinated by a team that included Kyegegwa District Coordinator Jovent Kyalimpa, Mayor Musa Swaibu Rutange, Hon. Tom Bright, Hon. Freedom Kaheru and Hon. Jackie Kyogabirwe, working with PLU Secretariat staff and grassroots mobilisers.
The engagement also incorporated a community-support component. Ahead of the Baraza, PLU announced that Mama Kits donated by Ajuna Uganda had been received to support expectant mothers attending activities connected to the event. Medical and legal teams were also among the PLU groups involved in the Kyegegwa programme.
Addressing the turnout after the event, Rt. Hon. Twalla Fadil thanked the people of Kyegegwa, local organisers, national leaders and PLU supporters who participated in the gathering.
He also expressed appreciation to PLU Chairman Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba for providing the organisation with the opportunity to continue its mobilisation activities.
The Kyegegwa Baraza signals the start of the next phase of PLU’s district-level mobilisation, with the organisation expected to take similar engagements to other parts of the country as it works to consolidate its structures and maintain direct interaction between its national leadership and grassroots membership.
